A Few of Charlene's Memories from the Ranch

We were always thrilled to have their family visit with us on the Killgore Ranch south of Maryneal. A few times the little boys stayed with us for a week at a time so that Joy could go with Glen on his duties with the Navy. (One of those trips was to Hawaii, and we were glad Joy could go with him.) I recall a time in later years (after our children were grown) when Glen and Joy were here for a visit. Joe again took Glen for a deer hunt. Glen was delighted when he saw a nice buck, seeming to pose in perfect silhouette! But his first shot missed. And his second shot missed. Glen was sighting in the gun for a third shot . . . but reconsidered. Glen threw his hand up in the air and declared to the buck, “Oh, get out of here! You deserve to live, after I missed you twice!”

When our two families were together we always enjoyed playing table/board games. On one of those visits Glen brought a game we had never played before called Risk. After we had played the game a few times over the weekend, Glen decided that we should make it a little different by changing the rules a little; and then change a little more; and then change a little more. But as the night wore on and Joy and I were beating them . . . Glen finally just picked up the board and tossed the pieces on the floor ! Such a surprise! But he really did love to win. After we all swept the pieces up, Glen threw the game in the trash. But I
refused to give up a perfectly good game. (Glen liked to game so much that he
eventually purchased a new copy of it, but was disappointed that they had made a few changes to the board and the pieces. He told us that he liked the
original design better. What he did NOT know was that I kept the original game
. . . and gave it as a gift to him when he earned his Doctorate degree! )

Just this past year Glen and I were visiting about more important things. He shared with me that when he and Joy were engaged, discussing their commitment for the future, “our verse was Exodus 34:4 – Oh, magnify the Lord with me. Let us exalt His Name together.” And he said they committed not to be critical of others (you know – like gossip, etc.)

One time Mother and I flew from Lubbock to Albuquerque. During that visit we played the game of Trivial Pursuit. Mother and I were a team together, and our question was regarding a one-word newspaper headline that went around the world. Mother thought of the time when the king of England stepped down from his throne, and I realized the one word: Abdication!!! Glen was totally flabbergasted, appalled that Mother and I would be able to give the correct answer!!
